County Spotlight: Cambridgeshire's Biggest Company by Turnover Scores Lowest on Digital Confidence

Cambridgeshire ranks #4 of 47 counties for digital confidence, but its top firm by turnover, Car World (Cambs), scores near the bottom.

Every county in Archive Partners’ tracked cohort holds twenty monitored companies, scored against the same digital confidence framework we run across the full UK iXBRL stream. This week’s leaderboard check lands on Cambridgeshire, which posts an average digital confidence score of 0.372 across its twenty companies — the fourth-highest of the 47 counties we track, comfortably clear of the 0.311 cross-county average, and close enough to third-placed Herefordshire (0.374, spotlighted here on 14 August) that the two are effectively tied.

The county’s top and bottom performers tell a sharper story than the average alone. Advanced Technology Ventures (UK) Ltd posts the highest digital confidence score anywhere in Cambridgeshire at 0.86 — yet by turnover it’s the smallest of the county’s twenty tracked companies, at £1.83m, ranked dead last (#20) on revenue. At the other end sits Car World (Cambs) Ltd, Cambridgeshire’s largest company by turnover at £56.85m and its #1 by county rank, which scores just 0.07 on digital confidence — one of the lowest readings in the entire county and still carrying a “Verification Pending” status rather than a confirmed one.

That inversion — smallest revenue, top confidence score; largest revenue, near-bottom score — isn’t a general rule inside the county, which is worth stressing before it’s overstated. Premier Holidays Limited, Cambridgeshire’s #3 company by turnover at £45.46m, scores 0.47, comfortably above the countywide average. So does AVR Photonics Group Limited (£20.7m turnover, rank #9, score 0.54). The pattern isn’t “big companies score badly” — it’s that Car World specifically, the single largest revenue generator in the county, sits at the opposite end of the confidence scale from what its market position might suggest.

The bottom of the table carries its own cluster worth flagging. Three separately incorporated companies trading under the Manchetts name — Manchetts (Burwell) Limited (rank #15, £10.37m, score 0.24), Manchetts Limited (rank #17, £9.12m, score 0.12) and Manchetts PB Limited (rank #16, £10.25m, score 0.0) — occupy adjacent county ranks, share the same SIC 45200 motor-vehicle-maintenance classification, and all carry “Verification Pending” status. A £0.0 score is the floor of the scale, not a rounding artefact, and it sits directly between two sibling entities scoring only marginally higher. For anyone assessing this group as a whole rather than company-by-company, the digital confidence read is consistently weak across all three legal entities, not an isolated one-off.

This continues the pattern our Cumbria, Isle of Wight and Herefordshire spotlights have each flagged in turn: digital confidence and turnover move largely independently of each other. Cambridgeshire’s twist is that the independence shows up starkest at the extremes of a single county’s own revenue table, rather than as a broad small-firms-beat-big-firms trend. A £1.83m firm can out-score a £56.85m one by more than eleven-to-one on this measure, while companies in between the two show no consistent relationship to size at all.

For anyone using this data to size up a counterparty, the operational read stays the same as in prior spotlights: turnover and sector are convenient shorthand for how buttoned-up a business is likely to be, but they’re a poor predictor of digital signal strength. Car World’s market-leading revenue says nothing about its 0.07 score, and Advanced Technology Ventures’ small footprint says nothing about its 0.86. Both need checking directly rather than inferred from size.

One caveat carried forward from every prior spotlight, because it remains true a month and a half on: this analysis uses our digital confidence score rather than raw search footprint counts. A fresh check for this piece confirms the search-footprint field is still returning a flat value of 10 across every company in the dataset, sitewide, with no variation — the same open data-pipeline issue first flagged on 13 July. Digital confidence, which blends verification status and disclosure consistency rather than a single raw count, remains the field actually doing the analytical work behind comparisons like this one.

The full Cambridgeshire leaderboard is browsable directly, ranked by digital confidence and turnover side by side, including the Advanced Technology Ventures/Car World spread and the three-company Manchetts cluster described above. We’ll keep rotating through the remaining counties in future spotlights.
