County Spotlight: Norfolk's Digital Confidence Sits in Its Smaller Firms

Norfolk ranks #5 of 47 counties for digital confidence, but 73% of its tracked turnover sits in firms still awaiting verification.

Every county in Archive Partners’ tracked cohort holds twenty monitored companies, each scored against the same digital confidence framework. This week’s leaderboard check lands on Norfolk, a county best known for farming, food and coastline rather than online transparency, yet one that posts the fifth-highest average digital confidence score in the dataset.

Across its twenty tracked companies, Norfolk averages 0.366. That is well above the 0.311 cross-county average across all 47 counties, and it sits just behind four counties we have already profiled in this series: Cumbria, Isle of Wight, Herefordshire and Cambridgeshire. Norfolk is the first county in the top five that we have not yet profiled.

A split between verified and pending

The headline average hides a sharp divide. Eight of Norfolk’s twenty companies carry a Verified status, and they average 0.575. The other twelve are still Verification Pending and average 0.226. In other words, the verified group scores more than two and a half times higher than the pending group.

The money runs the opposite way. The eight verified firms account for about £103.6m of turnover. The twelve pending firms account for roughly £281.7m, which is around 73% of the county’s £385m tracked total. Norfolk’s digital confidence is real, but it is concentrated in the smaller half of its economy.

The big names are quiet online

Look at the top of the county ranking and the pattern is clear. The five largest firms by turnover average just 0.354, close to the county average, and several score very low:

  • Traditional Norfolk Poultry Limited (£53.9m, county rank #2) scores 0.00 and is Verification Pending.
  • Car World (Cambs) Ltd (£56.9m, rank #1) scores 0.07.
  • Elsoms Seeds Limited (£32.1m, rank #4) scores a middling 0.40.

The exception is the care sector. Country Court Care Homes 6 Limited (£27.9m, rank #5) is verified and scores 0.73, the highest of the five. Care providers operate under heavy regulatory scrutiny, and that tends to produce more public, consistent disclosure.

Where the confidence comes from

The county’s top scorer is Advanced Technology Ventures (UK) Ltd, a business-support firm with £1.8m of turnover and a score of 0.86. Behind it come Country Court Care Homes 6 (0.73), SOS Property Management Limited (0.57, £40.6m, the largest verified firm in the county), Wensum Valley Hotel Golf & Country Club Limited (0.57) and AVR Photonics Group Limited (0.54).

These firms span property, hospitality, optics and business services. What they share is a consistent trail of public references, not a particular sector or size. SOS Property Management is the useful counterexample to “small beats big”: at £40.6m it is the third-largest company in the county and still scores well, so scale does not preclude digital confidence.

Meanwhile four Norfolk companies score below 0.10: Traditional Norfolk Poultry, Car World (Cambs), Uphouse Farm Limited and, ironically, Discover-IT Ltd, an IT-services firm at 0.01.

What it signals

Norfolk’s score tells us three things about digital confidence in a mixed rural economy:

  1. Agriculture and primary production lag. The poultry, farm and seed businesses cluster at the lower and middle ranges, which fits sectors that sell business to business and rarely need a public profile.
  2. Regulated sectors lead. Care homes, property management and hospitality carry the strongest verified signals.
  3. Verification is the real gap. Moving the pending majority to verified status would lift the county average more than any change among small firms.

Filing dates worth noting

Three of Norfolk’s companies have accounts dates close at hand. Country Court Care Homes 6 and Wensum Valley Hotel Golf & Country Club are both due on 31 December 2026, and Enovis Surgical GB Limited’s recorded due date of 30 September 2026 has just passed, so a fresh filing may already be on the register. Anyone tracking Norfolk’s supply chain should check Companies House for the latest position.
