Every county in Archive Partners’ tracked cohort holds twenty monitored companies, scored against the same digital confidence framework we run across the full UK iXBRL stream. This week’s leaderboard check lands on Herefordshire — a county whose economy is more associated with orchards and agriculture than online disclosure, yet which posts the third-highest average digital confidence score in the dataset.
Averaged across its twenty tracked companies, Herefordshire scores 0.374 — behind only Cumbria (0.412, our spotlight county on 13 July) and Isle of Wight (0.389, spotlighted here on 10 August), and well clear of the 0.311 cross-county average across all 47 counties in the dataset. That puts three of our four county spotlights so far in a cluster of small, rural counties rather than the industrial or financial-services heartlands one might expect to lead on digital signal strength.
The pattern inside the county is the most striking part. Herefordshire’s highest-scoring company is M J Meredith Orchard Services Limited, a £0.22m-turnover agricultural services firm posting a 0.77 digital confidence score — one of the strongest results anywhere in our ~650-company dataset. Hereford Military History Festival Ltd (£0.05m turnover, 0.68) and Hereford River Carnival CIC (£0.02m, 0.60) fill out the top three, all scoring well above the national average on turnover figures a fraction of the size of the county’s biggest employers.
Contrast that with Galebreaker Ltd, Herefordshire’s largest tracked company by turnover at £14.06m and its #1 by county rank. Its digital confidence score is 0.25 — below both the countywide average and the national mean. STL Energy Limited, the county’s #2 by turnover at £11.43m, scores only marginally better at 0.33. Between them, Herefordshire’s two biggest companies by revenue sit at or below the average score posted by its twenty smallest-turnover entrants, several of which are community-interest companies and sole-sector operators with turnovers under £50,000.
This continues a pattern our Cumbria and Isle of Wight spotlights both flagged: digital confidence and turnover move largely independently of each other, and in counties dominated by small, locally-embedded firms, that independence tends to favour the small end. The counties sitting furthest below the national average — Greater London (£176.8m average turnover, 0.302 digital confidence), West Midlands (£65.9m, 0.280) and Merseyside (£58.8m, 0.277) — all carry average turnovers several multiples above Herefordshire’s own. If digital confidence tracked company scale, these would rank near the top of the table. Instead, the scale leaders sit in the middle of the pack, and a county of orchard-services firms and community festivals sits third.
For anyone using this data to size up a counterparty, the operational read is consistent with what we’ve said in prior spotlights: turnover and sector are convenient shorthand for how buttoned-up a business is likely to be, but they’re a poor predictor of one specific thing — how much independently verifiable digital signal exists about a company beyond its statutory filings. A £220,000-turnover orchard contractor can out-score a £14m county leader on that measure. Neither fact says anything definitive about financial health on its own, but it does mean digital confidence is worth checking directly rather than assumed from size or sector.
One caveat carried forward from the Cumbria and Isle of Wight pieces, because it remains true a month on: this analysis uses our digital confidence score rather than raw search footprint counts. A fresh check run for this piece confirms the search-footprint field is still returning a flat value of 10 across every company in the dataset, sitewide, with no variation — the same open data-pipeline issue first flagged on 13 July. Digital confidence, which blends verification status and disclosure consistency rather than a single raw count, remains the field actually doing the analytical work behind county comparisons like this one.
The full Herefordshire leaderboard is browsable directly, ranked by digital confidence and turnover side by side, including the Meredith Orchard/Galebreaker/STL Energy spread described above. We’ll keep rotating through the remaining counties in future spotlights.
